The extract of Oregon Grape Root (Mahonia aquifolium) has been used by herbalists to alleviate psoriasis for over a hundred years, according to the American Herbalists Guild.
The success of the treatment led medical researchers to investigate the claims and review the active constituents of the plant. Their findings revealed that Mahonia aquifolium contains potent alkaloids that are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and, perhaps most telling, anti-proliferative. The extract was seen to inhibit rapid skin cell growth which exactly what happens in the case of psoriasis.
The results of controlled research published in the Journal of Dermatology revealed that the herbal extract applied topically to psoriasis lesions produces astounding results for 4 out of 5 psoriasis sufferers. After just 12 weeks, 81% of people using the extract reported that their condition was either completely cleared or significantly alleviated. And, unlike the conventional treatments (e.g. corticosteroids) Mahonia aquifolium extract was not associated with any significant adverse side effects.
